Ecommerce SEO
Adult ecommerce SEO for UK online shops
Adult ecommerce SEO is how a lawful UK online shop gets its categories and products found, and turns those visits into orders. It means strong, safe-for-work category pages, product pages with honest claims, filters that do not flood the index, and product data that follows each platform's adult rules.
Four layers of an adult shop
- No. 1Category pages
A brief opening paragraph fit for any screen, sensible sorting, and links to guides.
- No. 2Product pages
Materials, dimensions, care, safety and returns, stated plainly and backed by evidence.
- No. 3Filters
Useful combinations indexed; the long tail of colour, size and price filters kept out.
- No. 4Product data
Accurate structured data and a clean feed, with adult items flagged where platforms require it.
Filter pages are a common source of wasted crawling on shop sites; our note on faceted navigation goes further, and category pages get their own guide in ecommerce category SEO.
Claims, and who checks them
Since 2011 the Advertising Standards Authority has covered marketing claims that companies make on their own websites as well as in paid adverts. For adult shops, claims about body-safe materials, medical benefits or effects need evidence behind them.
Honest, specific product copy is also what search engines and AI answers tend to quote. Vague superlatives help neither. Technical groundwork, including the adult rating for explicit pages, is on adult technical SEO.
Shopping listings
Google treats adult merchandise as restricted in Merchant Center. Products must be flagged as adult, sexually explicit imagery is not allowed, and what can appear in free listings and Shopping ads is limited.
- Flag adult products accurately in the feed.
- Use clean, non-explicit product images.
- Keep titles descriptive and free of innuendo.
Shops with a physical premises should pair this with adult local SEO.
Product pages that answer and convert
The questions UK shoppers ask before buying an intimate product are consistent: what it is made of, its size in centimetres, how loud it is, how to clean it, how it is charged, and whether it can be returned. Answer them in the same place on every product, with prices shown including VAT, and a line on how the parcel and the card statement will look. Pages built this way rank for the specific searches people make and give AI answers accurate facts to repeat.
Returns, hygiene and the law
Under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013, online shoppers usually have fourteen days to cancel, but goods sealed for health protection or hygiene reasons can fall outside that right once the seal is broken. Many adult products qualify, which is why clear returns wording matters so much. State plainly which items can be returned unopened, which cannot once opened, and what happens if something arrives faulty, which remains covered regardless. A clear page answers the question shoppers search for and saves your team the same email every week. Your solicitor should confirm the wording.
Reviews on product pages
Product reviews help shoppers and search, and since April 2025 they are also regulated. Collect them from verified buyers only, ask every buyer in the same way, show low ratings as well as high ones, and never reward a review in a way you do not disclose. Avoid review widgets that load slowly or hide text from crawlers; the review text should be in the page. Marked up honestly, ratings can appear in search results for products that are not treated as explicit.
Delivery and discretion pages
A clear delivery page is one of the most visited and least written pages on an adult shop. It should state the delivery options and prices across the UK, typical times, what the outer packaging looks like, what name appears on the bank statement, and how parcels are handled if nobody is home. Shoppers search these questions before their first order, and a page that answers them in plain words both ranks for those searches and removes a reason not to buy. Link to it from every product page and from checkout, and keep a short version of the same answers in the order confirmation email.
Guides that bring new shoppers
Category and product pages win shoppers who already know what they want. Guides win the ones still deciding: how to choose a first toy, how to clean different materials, which lubricant suits which material, how to buy discreetly. Written in a calm, safe-for-work voice, with evidence for any health point and links to the relevant categories, these guides are what search engines rank for broad questions and what AI answers tend to quote. Two or three well-made guides usually do more than twenty thin blog posts. Keep each one up to date, with a visible review date, and retire guides that no longer match your range.
Shopping listings for adult products
Google's shopping listings accept some adult products under its adult content policy, with restrictions on where they appear and what images can show; other platforms set their own rules. Products must be flagged correctly in the feed, images must follow the policy, and prices, stock and delivery costs must match the website. A mismatch between feed and page is one of the commonest reasons for disapprovals, and repeated disapprovals can put a whole account at risk, which for an adult shop can be hard to reverse. We check the feed monthly against the live site and fix differences before they cost listings.
Internal links that carry shoppers
Links inside the shop decide how easily shoppers and search engines move from broad pages to specific ones. Every guide should link to the categories it discusses; every category should link to its most useful guide and to closely related categories; every product should link back to its category and to the care or delivery pages buyers need. Breadcrumbs, related products and "pairs well with" sections do much of this automatically if they are set up with care. Orphan pages, which nothing links to, are among the commonest findings in our audits, and they are quick to fix once found with a crawl.
A catalogue clean-up, step by step
- Find duplicate and near-duplicate product pages, such as colour variants, and decide which should stand alone.
- Remove or redirect discontinued products that still attract links, and return a 404 or 410 for the rest.
- Rewrite manufacturer descriptions that appear on dozens of other shops, starting with your best sellers and the products with the highest margin.
- Check the product feed against the pages, so price, stock and the adult flag match everywhere, and repeat the check after every price change.
Filters and categories are covered in our notes on faceted navigation and category SEO.
Reported each month
Each month: organic sessions and revenue by category and by product, indexed product and category pages, the share of products with complete facts, review count and rating, and how shopping listings perform where you use them. We report revenue from search alongside traffic, because a page that brings visitors who never buy is not yet doing its job. Plans are on our pricing page.
Questions
Can adult products appear in Google Shopping?
Some can, with restrictions. Google treats adult merchandise as restricted, requires it to be flagged as adult, and does not allow sexually explicit images. Free listings and ads each have their own limits.
Do advertising rules apply to our own product pages?
Yes. The ASA's remit covers marketing claims on a company's own website, so claims about materials, safety or effects need evidence.
How many products should a category page show?
Enough to be useful, with a short introduction above them. The bigger risk is thousands of near-empty filter pages, which we keep out of the index.
Will you rewrite all our product descriptions?
We start with the categories and products that bring most of the revenue, and write templates your team can follow for the rest.
Do UK customers have a right to return opened adult products?
Often not, if the item was sealed for hygiene reasons and the seal is broken; faulty goods are still covered. State your policy clearly and have your solicitor check the wording.
