Technical SEO
Adult technical SEO for UK sites with age checks
Adult technical SEO is the engineering that lets search engines reach the right pages of a lawful adult site, and only those. In the UK that now means planning around age assurance, labelling explicit pages for SafeSearch, keeping thin pages out of the index, and applying the cookie rules that changed in 2026.
Open pages rankGated pages protect
Six checks we run first
| Area | What good looks like | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Open and gated pages | Safe-for-work landing, category and guide pages stay open; explicit material sits behind the age check | Visibility lives where it is allowed to |
| Crawler parity | Search engines meet exactly what an unverified visitor meets | No cloaking, no surprises |
| SafeSearch labelling | Explicit pages carry the adult rating; nothing else does | The right pages are filtered, the rest are not |
| Index control | Thin tag, filter and internal search pages kept out of the index | Crawling is spent on pages that matter |
| Speed on mobile | Images and scripts trimmed; the age check itself loads fast | Visitors stay past the first screen |
| Cookies | Consent only where the law still needs it; analytics set up to use the 2026 exception where it fits | Fewer banners, fewer lost visitors |
Why the open-and-gated split matters under the Online Safety Act is explained on adult SEO in the UK, and in more depth in our note on age gate SEO.
The 2026 cookie changes
The Data (Use and Access) Act 2025 changed the UK cookie rules from 5 February 2026. Cookies used only to collect statistics about how a website is used, in order to improve it, no longer need prior consent, as long as visitors are told clearly and given a way to object.
Advertising and cross-site tracking still need consent, and the maximum penalty for breaking the rules rose to £17.5 million or 4% of global turnover. For adult sites that means fewer banners standing between a visitor and the age check, provided analytics are set up to qualify. Your data protection adviser should confirm the details for your setup.
Our approach to the work
- No. 1Crawl
A full crawl as a search engine and as an unverified visitor, compared side by side.
- No. 2Specify
Prioritised fixes written for your developers or platform.
- No. 3Check
We review changes before and after they go live, including the age check itself.
Online shops have their own technical needs, from faceted navigation to product feeds, covered on adult ecommerce SEO.
The cookie exception, in practice
The statistics exception is narrower than many banners assume. It covers analytics whose only purpose is to understand and improve your own site, with the use explained in your cookie notice and a simple, free way for visitors to refuse. Anything that feeds advertising, remarketing or sharing with third parties still needs consent first. The Act also made the party that instigates a cookie responsible as well as the one that sets it, so a tag added by an agency or plugin counts against the site that allowed it.
We audit every cookie and tag your pages set, sort them into exempt and consent-needing groups, and configure analytics so it genuinely fits the exception rather than claiming it. Many adult sites end up with a shorter banner, or none for most visitors, and cleaner data.
The age check and page experience
Google's guidance on intrusive interstitials does not count against pages for showing a check required by law, such as an age check. What can still hurt is how the check is built: a heavy script that loads before anything else, a layout that jumps when the check appears, or a check that reappears on every page. We test the check on a mid-range phone, keep it light, and make sure a verified visitor is remembered for a sensible period. Open pages that do not need the check should never show it.
Checking what crawlers receive
- Fetch key open pages with Search Console's URL Inspection and confirm the rendered page matches what a visitor sees.
- Fetch a gated page while logged out and confirm no explicit text, images or media file names are in the source.
- Read a week of server logs for Googlebot and Bingbot, and note which page types use most of the crawling.
- Compare the indexed pages in Search Console with the pages you want indexed, and list the differences.
The indexing side is explained in our note on indexation for UK adult sites.
UK and international versions
Many UK adult businesses also sell to Ireland, Europe or the US. If you run separate versions, mark them with hreflang so Google shows each audience the right one, use the local currency and spelling on each, and keep shipping and legal pages specific to each market. If you run one site for everyone, say clearly which countries you deliver to and price in pounds by default for UK visitors. Mixed signals, such as US spellings, dollar prices and a UK address on the same page, confuse searchers and search engines alike.
Structured data that matches the page
Structured data helps search engines understand products, organisations and articles, but enhanced listings are withheld from pages classed as explicit, and markup describing things a visitor cannot see helps nobody. We add Organization markup on the home page, product markup on open product pages with accurate price, stock and VAT-inclusive pricing, and article markup on guides. Every value must match the visible page. Where a page sits behind the age check, it gets no markup intended for search features.
Moving platform or redesigning safely
A new platform or theme is where adult sites most often lose search traffic, because redirects, age gate behaviour and SafeSearch labels all change at once. Before the move we list every URL that earns traffic or links, map each one to its new address, and decide which pages sit open and which behind the check. After launch we compare indexing, crawl errors and rankings week by week for two months. Most problems are found in the first week if someone is looking.
Logs, alerts and the weekly look
Technical problems on adult sites tend to arrive quietly: a plugin update that adds an index tag to every product, a CDN rule that blocks a crawler, a new template that puts thumbnails back in front of the age check. We set simple alerts for sudden changes in indexed pages, crawl errors and server responses on the main templates, and take a short weekly look at Search Console. Most issues caught within a week cost little and usually take minutes to reverse; the same issue found three months later usually means lost rankings that take months to recover.
Reported each month
Each month: indexed pages by type, crawl activity on open pages, loading and stability scores for each template measured on phones, cookie set-up against the current rules, and the pages that appear with SafeSearch on and off. Each finding comes as a ticket your developer can act on, with the reason and a way to check it is fixed. Plans are on our pricing page.
Questions
Can Google see pages behind our age check?
It should see what an unverified visitor sees. Keep the pages you want ranked open and safe for work, and let the age check protect everything explicit.
Do we still need a cookie banner for analytics?
Possibly not. Since February 2026 UK law allows analytics used only for statistics to improve your site without prior consent, provided you explain it and offer an easy opt-out. Advertising and cross-site tracking still need consent.
Will labelling pages as adult hurt our rankings?
It tells Google which pages to filter for people using SafeSearch. Label explicit pages only, and keep the rest of the site clearly safe for work.
Which platforms do you work with?
Shopify, WooCommerce, Magento, custom builds and most subscription platforms. We write specifications your developers can follow.
Can we drop the cookie banner after the 2026 changes?
Sometimes, for most visitors. Analytics used only to improve your own site can run without prior consent if you explain it and offer an easy opt-out. Advertising and remarketing cookies still need consent first.
